Tickets for TODD. Zong horror opera "TODD" by "The King and the Jester" Rock musical by the Todd group The King and the Jester

A few months ago I got acquainted with the work of the King and the Jester group, which had never really interested me. Before, for me, they were always "strange punks with songs about cannibal role-playing", but then something (my husband, probably) kept my ear on their songs on our beloved radio, and made them fall in love with their last three albums: "Theater demon "and two-disk" TODD ".
TODD is good. Very good on the record. We honestly downloaded it from the network, honestly listened to everything and many times, I memorized the texts and now I can answer tricky questions with quotes or loudly and badly duplicate Gorshenev in the shower (as I display his low tones in the upper register - this show is not for the faint of heart , Yes).
But when we heard that the TODD musical had been staged and we could go to it, the faithful and I bought tickets (in a few months, damn it, we sorted it out like hot cakes from Lovett) and got ready to wait. We waited for a long time - and today we went to the Film Actor Theater for a viewing. And then my question arises:
HOW COULD IT BE FOUND THIS ?!
Sorry, I didn’t want to be so emotionally, but I didn’t have enough restraint. I was painfully worried in my soul for this event, I loved these songs too much not to want to hear them live ... and that's why I was very disappointed.
But let's digress from emotions and sort everything out point by point.
Let's note the fact that everyone screwed up - and first of all the soloist (oh-vey, really screwed up, I'm not being naughty). Great and terrible Pot, how, truly, how could you give a rooster (about a rooster, by the way, after)? How could you forget the text so many times? Well, okay, she said, "we'll sweep it away," then we'll sweep it away.
But who should still have his hands ripped off is the sound engineer. Of course, I understand that the musicians sitting behind the glass partition also want to be heard, but, apparently, the news for the organizers of the performance will be that the main thing in a musical is not music, but a song, that is, WORDS. In the hall, the words were understood only by those who could sing along - that is, they already knew the entire text by heart. I was lucky - I knew. But those three songs that were added to the musical and were not on the discs - I did not make out at all. At best, some words were guessed, on average, nothing. Well, you can't underestimate the voices like that. Well, you shouldn't let the soloist's microphone go off FUCKLY in the middle of a song. Well, you can't spend one and a half lemma on setting and not buy normal microphones. Well, you can't screw up the performance for everyone except the dedicated fans.
Or is it possible? Maybe I don't understand something?
Do you think I will limit myself to the sound only? Oh no, let's go through the production.
I have never seen SO MANY screwed up scenes. Really, guys, I even saw the avant-garde performances of Winnie the Pooh - and this, I can tell you, is extreme.
First, let's walk through poor Gorshenev. I understand that a singer is not an actor. I understand that at the rehearsal they drew lines on the floor for him and he learned to walk exactly on them. I understand everything - but why was it necessary to move the entire first part along these lines like a log, and make terrible faces throughout the second, which were supposed to symbolize (I wonder what?) Horror and madness? You can't blame Gorshenev - but where, waving, did the director look ?! Why couldn't you direct it properly? I do not understand.
In this regard, I would like to recall the well-known phrase that punks are hoi. I mean, let me explain: a passionate punk manner of performance does not replace the emotion embedded in the performance. Listen to the latest aria of the musical, the most famous "On the Edge" - how it looks on the disc. Do you feel it? Todd is ready to die in this scene. He has already given up life, from struggle, from everything. His story is over. This is not the same avenger from the beginning of the musical, who is full of life and rage - this is a tired, exhausted, lost all person whom he takes the last step to death. Can you feel it?
But on the stage it was not visible. Well, actually.
Positively cheerful Gorshenev, who, you see, took something amusing during the intermission and still felt joy, moved swiftly across the stage, emotionally and passionately yelling "uuuu-here I see the light", and it was absolutely clear - the hell he would die now ... He's still making them all hypothetical. It is not clear to whom, but aggression, strength, emotion - all this was quite obvious.
No, I understand, Gorshenev is rushing, well, give him something there, or at least over the head, so that he can portray a little sadness and longing. Just do not overdo it, otherwise it will forget the words in the final aria)

Let's continue walking through the ruined scenes. Here is the one after which I sobbed and asked to take me out of here. Well, not so emotionally, of course, but that - after which my impression of the performance changed.
Lovett's explanation scene. For those who are not in the subject, I suggest the plot: Lovett finds Todd with the corpse of her butcher uncle at the meat grinder, and when he intends to soak her for the company, he confesses to him in passionate love and becomes his accomplice. That is, you understand - she loves him passionately and is ready to accept death at his hand. She and he.
Do you know what the coolest thing you could do with this scene? Cool in quotes, of course. Make a secret declaration of love - a monologue in public. Listen to her words: "An exciting moment, a sweet moment ... after all, we are alone with you, only you and me and the darkness." What the hell is a sweet moment when, in the first bars of this touching composition, Todd disappears from the stage altogether, and Lovett, surrounded by a crowd of ballerinas, confesses his love to the audience? As a result, instead of the most tender scene of the entire musical, we get a public statement, spoken in secret to the whole world.
How beautiful it was to make this moment! With Todd, who collides with Lovett at the meat grinder (otherwise where is the intrigue, she must find him there), he attacks her in confusion, and how she is served to him - and the paired scenes, by the way, in the play are good, apparently this is the director's strong point - and begins to talk about his feelings. Then even if the ballet would run, and it would be possible to sing into the hall - but it was necessary to show that this is love. She is between two, she is a dialogue, not a monologue!

By the way, there is a general misunderstanding with Lovett. According to the emotion conveyed by the recording, she is a girl in love with Todd, who has grown up, and her childhood love has never grown, who admires a strong, beautiful, tragic man (and the main pleasure that every woman will experience when watching this performance is to admire the gorgeous half-naked Gorshenev, because he is very VERY sexy!) and is ready for anything for him - to die so to die, to kill so to kill. According to the play, this is a hardened girl who wants dough and a beautiful life. Even compare how her story is told in the recording and in the play: Laughters (the narrator on the disc) says "Once a little girl Lovett was in love with a beautiful young barber", Lovett in the play talks about looking out the window at a happy woman, whom Todd loves and dreamed of being this woman. In my opinion (there is no text at hand) she also describes well-being - in any case, it is on this that she rests against in the interludes: "We have money, we have everything, let's live well and cool." This is somehow wrong. Maybe it should be so, but somehow it is wrong.

You have to understand that Gorshenev, by the way, is wonderful. Really - none of my stupid claims can be directed at him. He is strong and bright, he rushes with vital energy stronger than anyone on the stage, except maybe a judge, he is powerful, like ... like a bazooka! Here is such a vigorous, powerful, mighty bazooka on stage, which will go off at any moment, and the main problem is that the producer or director simply cannot imagine where to attach this damn bazooka ?! As a result, she continues to hang on the stage. And the cheerful pathos of "On the Edge" is connected with this - Gorshenev is too full of energy to sing it devastatedly, as it should be.

But the most important question that arose when watching the performance was, forgive me, why make a message that is better not to do at all. This is me about the final song of the death girl, which is phrased something like this:
lyalyalya-lyalyalya, death is not cool, let's all live and enjoy life.
But if you do not live on a high, then let’s die as soon as possible.

Hey people, what do you think? Have you seen your target audience? Have you seen this teenage-gothic-punk tribe? You understand that any of them can remember this for the rest of his life, damn it, and when at thirty he, realizing that he hasn’t achieved anything and cannot change anything, will remember the performance he saw at eighteen and take an extra step standing at the edge of the window - you, you will be to blame for this.
Well, if we digress from the moral side of the issue, you will first define the message for yourself, and then try to formulate it in rhymes. Because "to live well, but you can die" is some kind of nonsense, not just one idea.

As an ardent fan of KiSha (though more than 10 years have passed since I went to the band's concerts), I cannot remain silent. :)

The album, which consists of two parts (as it is called - "TODD"), all comers have not only listened to it for a long time, but also memorized it. Someone shouts that this is a masterpiece, others yell that Kish is not the same ... But the fact remains: the performance is ready and tickets are already on sale. ;)

It's certainly very nice to write a musical based on ... a musical. Uh-huh, our Sondheim's Stephen did not write his "Sweeney Todd, Demon Barber of Fleet Street" for nothing. The Gorshenyov brothers (mostly the elder one) nevertheless kept their promise, which they began to make a lot of years ago, and changed Sondheim's creation in their own way (I hope there are no copyright problems? ..). You can, of course, say that it is not only in the musical that Todd is spoken of. There are plays - a whole lot. This is true. But a single listening to "TODD" from KiShe makes even a deaf person understand what was the primary source.

And God bless him.

"TODD"

The Teatralnoe Delo production company and the Russian punk-rock group Korol i Shut are preparing to present the audience with a production that has no analogues either in modern theater or in domestic “heavy” music. Zong-opera of horror "TODD" is a grandiose experiment, in which not only musicians take part, but also a whole team of professional theatrical figures: they all work together on a performance based on the old London legend of the merciless hairdresser Sweeney Todd. The King and the Jester group will provide live sound on stage, and the main role will be played by its leader Mikhail Gorshenev.

The sinister plot of this story is due to the aesthetics of the work of "The King and the Jester" and is definitely grotesque, but it is not devoid of tragic signs of modernity.

Barber Todd returns from hard labor, to which he was sent on a false denunciation, and discovers that nothing remains of his former life. He decides to take revenge on everyone who destroyed his happiness - neither the judge nor the priest will hide from the sharp razor blade of Sweeney Todd. But retribution does not bring peace: blinded by a thirst for blood, the unfortunate barber is no longer able to stop and with his own hands destroys the most precious thing that he, it turns out, had.

Mikhail Gorshenev took his dramatic role very seriously: despite a busy tour schedule, he graduated from acting courses, was engaged in staging a stage speech. Director Alexander Ustyugov, known for his acting and directing works at the Russian Academic Youth Theater and on television, works with him in "Todd".

The theatrical premiere is preceded by the release of the music album "TODD" in two parts with all the songs of the project combined into a real audio performance. Famous rock musicians (Konstantin Kinchev, Yulia Kogan, Billy Novik, Ilya Chert) took part in the recording, and the legendary theater and film actor Veniamin Smekhov reads the narrative text. Now the creators are working on the arrangements of the stage version of the Zong Opera for professional actors.

This production will be of interest not only to fans of the "King and the Jester" group, but also to progressive theater audiences who are ready for a daring experiment in which seemingly incompatible facets of modern culture are combined.

And here's another video:

The music of the "King and the Fool" group becomes an unexpected accompaniment to the dramatic plot.

About the play "Todd"

The story of Siuni Todd, whose reality is still considered a controversial fact by science, has been inspiring artists, directors and filmmakers for decades. It has been staged at some of the most famous Broadway theaters and some of the world's finest opera houses. Mikhail Gorshenev decided to look at the plot in a new way, paying attention primarily to its emotional side. In order for the audience to be able to “experience” his feelings together with Todd, he turns not only to dramatic theatrical techniques, but also to choreography with music.

The performance is accompanied by the "King and the Fool" group. The musicians are "invisibly" on the stage, behind a glass wall. She, as conceived by the author, is an effective part of the musical scenery.

The premiere of the rock musical "Todd" took place in November 2012 at the Moscow Film Actor Theater. Since then, the production has been marching triumphantly across the capital and Russian stages. On September 14, 2018, the play "Todd" will be shown at the Moscow Youth Palace.

Creator and actors

The author and creator of the rock musical "Todd" is the leader of the "King and the Jester" group Mikhail Gorshenev. He also starred Sweeney Todd. It should be noted that the brilliant performance was the first and only one in the theatrical production career of a musician.

In 2013, Mikhail Gorshenev died suddenly, but it was decided to continue the project. His place on the stage was taken by Robert Ostrolutsky. Today the rock musical "Todd" is also unique in that it is the only place where the legendary band "The King and the Fool" performs.

Description

On September 27, 2019, on the stage of the Moscow Crocus City Hall, a unique theatrical and musical performance will be shown - the rock musical "TODD", or "Zong Opera"!

TODD is a completely new interpretation of an old London legend in an unexpected, modern way. Famous history, urban slums, graffiti, dance, parkour - and against this background a really serious dramatic action about love, hate, mental anguish, revenge and suffering unfolds. Here philosophical questions are raised and Shakespeare's passions flare up in earnest.

"The story we are playing now ... half funny, half dramatic ... This is a story about human suffering" - said Mikhail Gorshenev about the play.

The plot of the musical is based on the eerie London legend of the 18th century about the barber Sweeney Todd. The story of a mysterious and dark character has been referenced many times by famous Broadway theaters, cutting-edge opera houses and Hollywood's great directors. A new libretto and score was written for the domestic production. The musical accompaniment of the performance, created by Mikhail Gorshenev, became the basis for the last two-part album of the King and the Jester group and the audio version of the rock musical, where the role of the narrator is played by Veniamin Smekhov, whose voice cannot be confused with anyone. The audio version is recommended for listening before watching the rock musical for maximum enjoyment of the production.

The performance is accompanied by live musical accompaniment of the musicians of the "King and the Jester" group, who throughout the entire performance are on the stage behind a large glass wall, which is an effective part of the musical's scenery.

A new director was invited especially for the tour (Yuri Kvyatkovsky - "Cops on Fire", "Normansk", "Orpheus and Eurydice" and others) and a fundamentally new version of his favorite musical was created. It is based on the idea of combining theatrical aesthetics with cinematography. This evening, the audience will witness not only the Zong Opera itself, but also the filming of a musical film about a crazy hairdresser. During the entire action, a camera crew will work, which will shoot everything that happens on the stage in real time and present the finished film on a screen standing among the scenery. Viewers can watch the entire filming process in real time.
