Thus, the bodies began to add up to two, and then one common bottom, filled with slushy lime. However, there weren’t enough volunteers for this job, because the city was filled with unemployment and tied to poverty, and work on buried bodies offered an attractive salary, taking into account the high degree of risk.

The crematorium was located outside the eastern gates of the city, so the military post was moved a little further, and a special transport line was introduced into the crematorium - trams were useless for transporting corpses. At first, thick and asphyxiating smoke fell into the neighborhood near the crematorium, but after numerous protests by residents who did not want to hear news that the smoke itself, no matter how unpleasant it was, was directed to the other side with a complex cable system.

All residents suffered a permanent separation from their immediate family outside of Oran, but after a few weeks their memories disappeared and people became indifferent. People of the aristocracy are accustomed to the suffering that bothered them and lost all their sovereignty. In the same way, flat and colorless also began to experience the death of their fellows. Everyone just wanted to bring it to the end - even if it meant death.

September and October came rainy, but the disease did not disappear. Doctors and members of the health team felt increasingly weary of the monotony of their death. Dr. Bernard, Rambert, Tarru and Grand - like many others - did not pay attention to statistics and lost the account of the dead. Each of them also tried in some way - more or less consciously - to break away from the terrible reality. Grand joined the city hall with the function of secretary, Dr. Bernard, and worked on his book. Bernard, in turn, was increasingly thinking about his wife.

Once he telegraphed to a caretaker in a sanatorium and was informed of its deterioration. Tarru - more stable than the previous two - obviously drew attention to Cottar, but he was still interested in the details everyday life cities in an unusual situation. Dr. Bernard, as a result of fatigue, increasingly lost control of his sensitivity, although in all respects he tried to think only about helping the sick. This was not easy, because he was very clear that he was impotent and powerless, and his role was to inform the families affected by this incident and prevent him from going to the hospital.

His appearance was once considered beneficial, and now he was perceived as news of a death sentence for a loved one. Rie and his friends also seriously reduced all gestures of compassion, as they could no longer express this sympathy to each individual patient. The number of cases they encountered also led them to ignore the basic precautions and hygiene associated with patient visits and disinfection.

It was not just time. The only person in the city who did not give up and did not despair was Kottar, who was aloof, but he was not isolated from anyone else. Tarru was especially fond of Tarra, who, despite being tired, constantly nourished his actions and kindness. Therefore, Kottarda and Tarru have united a growing friendship. Tarru also followed his friend, which was reflected in his notes. He wrote that Cottard, for whom, for some old sins, would have had in ordinary reality the ghost of investigation and imprisonment, belonged to one large group  convicts awaiting at that moment.

The fact that the verdict itself referred to another plane - for him it was a criminal case before, and for everyone on this moment  it was a conditional punishment: morbidity and death did not prevent him from building relationships with other people, fully understanding their situation. he lived before. Tarru and Kottor shared their leisurely walks through the streets of the city, watching the changing habits of local residents. They perceived how people, in the face of an almost certain death, begin to really - albeit without exaggeration - enjoy life.

Once they went to the city opera to perform Orpheus and Eurydice. This performance was regularly and consistently played every Friday since the plague, as it was played by a group that was enclosed in Oran by the plague. These performances also made the audience run away from reality, because everyone gave great importance  clothing, as if a dress or tunic could drive the plague away. It turned out that next week the guards would take over the gates, but it was also suggested that the reporter immediately go to his house and live there, preventing contact problems at the right time.

The wait lasted up to two weeks, during which Rambert, although he worked without morning restlessness, could not stop thinking about his upcoming departure. One day, the doctor repeated to him during the conversation the words of Otton, who advised the journalist to try to stay away from suspicious smugglers. The following week, Rambert moved into the home of a young soldier. There he spent a lot of time alone or talking with the old Spaniard, the mother of the boys, because he was asked to try to leave as little as possible.

The old woman asked him, she was not afraid to catch her wife when she met her. He replied that there was actually a risk, but a small one. When asked if his wife was good, he answered in the affirmative and asked if he believed in God. The answer to these questions explained older womanthat his wife was his only value and that he tried at all costs to return to her. On Wednesday, the reporter found out that he could leave the city the next night. At four in the afternoon, Rambert, who was restless that day, went to see Dr. Bernard.

Nevertheless, the journalist organized it himself and together they went to the hospital, where they found a doctor who had just crossed one of the patients who had swollen ulcers. Rambert, Tarru and Bernard together went to the doctor’s house. Along the way, the journalist stated that, having examined this issue, he came to the conclusion that the issue of the plague affected him, so he decided to stay and help friends in the fight against the plague. At the end of October, Oton's son fell ill. Dr. Bernard’s visit to the judge’s house was peaceful, although the child’s mother, apparently calm, was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, as the boy suffered from the plague.

Parents, however, without complaint, waive the laws in force - they agreed to take the child to the hospital without hesitation and quarantine themselves, although it was separated because the hotel used to be a secluded place only for the mother and child, while his father was about to leave to a holiday camp located in the city stadium. The doctor took the boy with him to the hospital, where he discovered that the condition of the child was hopeless. Therefore, he came up with the idea of \u200b\u200busing a new castel serum, which was made that evening.
