About the book “Spare World” Anatoly Drozdov

Nowadays, science fiction works are probably the most popular among a wide range of readers, since the plot generally does not contain drawn-out artistic descriptions, but there is a dynamic and intriguing narrative. Perhaps this is why the effect of reading such books can be compared to watching a high-quality action-packed film. But above all, it depends on a masterfully thought-out plot and high-quality presentation. The book “Spare World”, written by Anatoly Drozdov, can boast of this.

Belarusian writer Anatoly Drozdov is known among fans of the historical fiction genre for his original and unique style. Each story tells about a fictional, but so close to everyone, world, where the author skillfully conveys the special atmosphere of historical fiction, illusion, adventure, unusual irony and appropriate humor.

The main character of the book, Ivan Nagaikin, was convicted of a crime, and after the execution he must be sent to the Spare World without any clothes or shoes, without implants and other things that could ease his fate. The most interesting thing is that the computer chooses a specific place of exile for everyone. We can say that Ivan was still very lucky, but he could have gone to the mountains, desert or snowy plains. Some ended up in more pleasant places, but everyone faced the same fate - torture and death. Of course, no one was sent to distant planets, where there was a hot or icy surface without an atmosphere, because they immediately died there, but they also needed to suffer. Just wondering, for what merit did our hero get into such trouble? You can read in the book.

Despite the careful search of the prison guards, Ivan managed to take some things to the Spare World, without which he would have had a very difficult time. The resilience and fortitude of our hero is impressive, because many in his place would have given up long ago. Despite the fact that he had prosthetics instead of legs, and the ermine Mirka was his faithful companion, he managed to survive in this God-forsaken world, where he was unjustly exiled for his services to his homeland. There are still challenges ahead that will not be so easy to cope with...

Anatoly Drozdov qualitatively revealed a mysterious parallel world, which at first glance seems like paradise, but in fact is fraught with many dangers. The main characters are superbly portrayed, they are alive, you believe them and understand their actions. The author maintains intrigue throughout the entire narrative, which gives the book a special charm.

We made our way to the water at noon. First I heard the murmur, then I smelled freshness, and the surface of water flashed ahead. A sleepy stream flowed between the banks overgrown with bushes. I squeezed through the branches, knelt down and carefully took water into my mouth. “There are no harmful impurities,” the implant reported. Natural water turned out to be incredibly tasty. I drank to my heart's content, and then washed the syringes stained with saliva and bile with a multitool. Mirka, who had quenched her thirst, watched me with interest. I winked at the ermine, placed my treasures on a burdock leaf, sat down and touched the sensors on my prosthetics. The air hissed and the stumps jumped out of the cartridges. It was possible not to take it off - carbon fiber is not afraid of water, but the prostheses are new, the stumps are not used to the sleeves, and they took my socks away. Goats! As if these two rags could save my life. In Rudnik, my prosthetics were bionic, they even moved my toes, but in the Reserve World there is nowhere to recharge the batteries. I demanded that they be replaced, and the court agreed. They made a spare pair for me according to previous standards, and then the stumps were a little thicker...

I got down on all fours and crawled into the stream. Cool water closed overhead. Grace! I forgot the last time I swam.

When I surfaced, I saw an alarmed stoat. She darted along the shore, yapping excitedly.

- Swim to me! – I suggested.

Mirka hesitated for a moment, and then resolutely plopped into the water. Having plunged headlong, she emerged and, snorting, desperately flapped her paws. I reached out and took it out of the water. The stoat swam poorly: where could it practice? There are no reservoirs in Rudnik. Standing with her paws on my chest, Mirka spoke passionately about the junkies getting into wet places, then she shook herself off and lay down, closing her eyes. I followed her example. We came across a shallow stream, the water was knee-deep for a normal person. It was pleasant to lie on the sandy bottom. I was blissful for a while. After the Mine, the Spare World seemed like paradise. Clean air, wonderful water, grass, flowers, a yellow star, so similar to the earth’s sun... I understood that this was an illusion that would disappear when colliding with the inhabitants of the planet, but I didn’t want to think about it. After swimming until I was blue in the face, I crawled out of the stream, put on my prosthetics and got down to business. Having stripped the bark from the branches, he wove a bag into which he placed his treasures, having previously wrapped them in burdock. He made a strap from bark, which received a wide shoulder strap. Mirka’s claws are sharp, and she seriously scratched my shoulder. It’s better to rip off the bark. The ermine, having tried the “epaulet”, approved the idea. I also wove an apron, securing it around my loins. It is unknown how locals feel about nudity. Perhaps the sight of genitals will cause them aggression. It would be nice to find pants to cover the dentures. They are anatomical, but striking. The alien origin is immediately obvious.

Having finished with the outfit, I moved along the shore. Streams flow into rivers, and people live near rivers. Or who they have here...

I felt the smell after walking a couple of kilometers. He stopped and sniffed air through his nostrils. There were no doubts left, but I decisively moved forward. Whatever awaits me, it poses no danger.

...Bodies covered the meadow as far as the eye could see. The battle appears to have taken place recently. The skin of the corpses has turned black, but has not yet burst. A mountain of bodies blocked the stream, and I was glad that I was drinking upstream. A lake formed near the terrible dam. The hair of the dead swayed in the water like seaweed. Trying to breathe through my mouth, I moved further, stepping over the bodies and looking at them carefully. Definitely a humanoid race, practically indistinguishable from humans in appearance. They fight among themselves, however, just like us.

The wounds indicated that the aborigines killed each other with edged weapons. However, there were also those who died from gunshots. Judging by the entrance and exit holes, they fired from a large caliber. I determined this by turning over several bodies. It’s an unpleasant thing, but Rudnik weaned himself from disgust... Exit holes from bullets were rare: they were shot from a smoothbore. I wouldn’t be surprised if they came from guns with flintlocks or even matchlocks. The sixteenth-seventeenth century by earthly standards. Clothing could have given a more accurate idea, but there was none: the dead were stripped naked. Whether it was done by the winners or by alien looters, it makes no difference. The hope of getting pants disappeared.

I cursed and continued on my way. I didn’t change the route: there was no need. Bodies began to appear less frequently and soon disappeared altogether. I stepped into the bushes bordering the battlefield, and suddenly froze: a cart! With a broken wheel, tilted to one side, it blocked the road. The winners also ruled here. The horses were taken away, leaving a woman on the crumpled grass - dead, with her legs outstretched. There were no clothes on the corpse. You don't need to be an investigator to understand: they were raped and killed. We've seen enough of this... The marauders took away everything, even tore off the awning from the cart. If it weren't for the broken wheel, the cart would have rolled away.

I walked around the find and even looked between the wheels. The robbers might have forgotten something. Wait a minute! Nothing but trampled grass. I straightened up when I suddenly froze: something was wrong in the cart! After hesitating, I sat down and took a closer look. The bottom is noticeably lower than her floor. Double... When the cart had an awning, it was not noticeable. Apparently the looters were in a hurry...

The floor boards were nailed down tightly. The goods were hidden in a cart in a hurry or for a long time. Having examined the heads of the nails, I shook my head - I couldn’t do without a crowbar. Okay, let's go the other way. Having sat Mirka on the ground, I took out a multitool and snapped off the file. She easily bit into the boards. Having sawed through a couple, I tore them off from the top. I didn’t touch the rest: the cart is narrow, and my arms are long. Moments later I became the owner of the treasure. Women's dress made of lilac woolen fabric, two shirts made of bleached linen, one of which has lace at the neckline. A pair of silk stockings - one blue, the other red. Also in the cache was a bag made of durable leather, and in it were various ribbons, narrow and wide, patterned and striped. I've dreamed of it all my life! But I was sincerely happy with the needles and threads - just what I needed. The most valuable find were boots - short, just above the ankle. Smooth sole without heels, wide tops. The boots fit on the prosthetics like a glove. Maybe they stung a little, but the carbon fiber didn’t mind...

There was no money in the bag at all. Badly. The type of coins can say a lot. The era, the state of the economy, the level of technical development, the type of government... However, there was no need to complain: I was already lucky. Having sawed off a piece of board, I made a shovel out of it and dug a hole next to the cart. He dragged the dead woman into it and covered it with earth. A small thank you, but at least something. Who was this woman? Why did you end up at the battle site? “Shopkeeper,” popped up in my brain. The implant, having received the request, dug into the database and found the answer.

Having taken the loot and Mirka, I returned to the stream. I walked back upstream until the smell disappeared. Having found a suitable place, he made a halt. I got dirty, the smell of a corpse permeated my skin, so the first thing I had to do was bathe again. This time Mirka watched me from the shore and did not go into the water. Having finished washing, I got down to business. I cut off the hem of the shirt and hemmed the edge. It turned out just right: it doesn’t interfere with walking and the shame is covered. I put the scrap of canvas aside as a reserve - it won’t hurt. I didn’t bother pulling on the stockings or tying them with ribbons. You will hide the prosthetics, but they will have a specific look - only worn in a gay club. The second thing I did was make myself socks from scraps. Throwing on my shirt, I put on my dentures, stood up and turned to the ermine.

Mirka snorted.

“But not naked,” I said instructively and sat down again. Having cut the dress at the waist, I cut out pants from the skirt. The implant suggested options, I chose the simplest one. The seams on the outside are like those of the American Indians, only without the fringe. And the needle work is half as fast, and it doesn’t rub between the thighs. Instead of a belt, I used a ribbon, and instead of a codpiece, a flap with ribbons. Simple and tasteful. The pants came out baggy, but they didn’t rub or press. The overlap on the tops of the boots hid the prosthetics. Mirka chirped approvingly.
